The Ultimate F1 Championship (Part I)

The Ultimate F1 Championship (Part 1)
An Article by Brian Cotnoir

Well the New F1 Season is a little bit more than 2 weeks away, and it got me thinking.  Today I get to witness some of the best drivers in the world like Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton, and Kimi Raikonen, but I can’t help but wonder how these stars would have fared against the stars of the past like Michael Schumacher, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, and Juan Manuel Fangio.  So I decided to do a little experiment.   I’ve decided to create a Fictional Fantasy F1 season that pairs up 2 drivers from the same country on each team.  (13 teams; 26 drivers in total).   Then I would see how they would do based on the circuits of the Past and Present and assign them points based on their performance to find out not only who is the Best Formula 1 Driver, but what country would form the best Formula 1 team.

So before I introduce the teams, let me explain the method to my madness.   I paired up who I consider to be the two best drivers from 13 countries around the world and have ranked them according to how I feel they rank based on their statistics alone.  I awarded 1 point for each race victory and 2 points for each drivers championship won.  Here is how they rank for our “Pre-Season Rankings”.

In my next article, I will enter all 26 drivers in a Mock Championship season to see how these legends of Formula 1 would do against each other, but I’ll save the details for my next article.  So here are my best Formula Teams in the World

Team Germany- Michael Schumacher & Sebastian Vettel (Pre-Season 166 Points).   The winningest driver in F1 History paired up with one of the greatest drivers today would make for probably the most dominant team in F1 history.

I'd be excited too about this team

Team Great Britain- Lewis Hamilton & Jackie Stewart (Pre-Season Points 116).  No debate that Lewis Hamilton is the best active driver in Formula 1, but as for his teammate I decided to go with Jackie Stewart instead of Nigel Mansell because Stewart has won more drivers Championships than Mansell

Team Brazil- Ayrton Senna & Nelson Piquet Sr. (Pre-Sesaon Points 76).  These two Brazilian racing Legends have 3 World Drivers Championships each and were both two of the best drivers of the 1980’s

Team France- Alain Prost & Rene Arnoux (Pre-Season Points 63).  A very lopsided team with Prost having several times more wins than Arnoux (who doesn’t even have one drivers championship).  I briefly considered giving Arnoux’s spot to Didier Pironi, but decided to give it to Arnoux because he had more wins.

Team Finland- Kimi Raikonen & Mikka Hakkanen (Pre-Season Points 47) They are the 2 winningest Finnish drivers in F1 History and are both former F1 World Champions

Team Argentina- Juan Manuel Fangio and Carlos Reutemann (Pre-Season Points 46).  Team Argentina pairs up F1 Legend Juan Manuel Fangio with the highly underappreciated Carlos Reutemann, Fangio may have won twice as many races as Reutemann and is a 5 time world Champion, but Reutemann still has a lot to bring to the table

Team Austria- Nikki Lauda & Gerhard Berger (Pre-Season Points 41) Like the Argentine Team,  Berger may not have as much success as his teammate Lauda, but still brings a lot of experience and good drives to the team

Team Spain-Fernando Alonso & Carlos Sainz Jr. (Pre-Season Points 36). This team is all Alonso.   Sainz not only doesn’t have any wins, but he’s never finished on the podium in F1 (yet).  Hopefully his new ride at McLaren will guide him to the best results of his F1 career

The Master & the Student

Team Australia- Jack Brabham & Alan Jones (Pre-Season Points 34).  Both of these Australian drivers should be representing their homeland in this race, and are two of the best the sports ever seen.

Team Italy- Alberto Ascari & Giuseppe Farina (Pre-Season Points 24)- The Oldest Team in terms of combined age on this list, the early F1 greats of Ascari and Farina are still Italy’s most dominant F1 drivers, it’s a shame that Italy has only produced great F1 cars since the 1950’s and not as many successful F1 drivers.

Team United States- Mario Andretti & Phil Hill (Pre-Season Points 19).  The only two F1 drivers to win the World Drivers Championship Mario Andretti and Phil Hill are an excellent representation for my home countries team.

Team Canada Jacques and Gilles Villeneuve (Pre-Season Points 19).  The Canadian Farther-Son team of Jacques and Gilles Villeneuve only lose the tie breaker because they only have one championship between the two of them, but both are still great representatives for their home country of Canada.

Like Father Like Son

Team Belgium- Jacky Ickx & Thierry Boutsen (Pre-Season Points 11).  Bringing up the rear of the grid are the Belgium drivers Jacky Ickx and Thierry Boutsen.  Neither driver has one the World Drivers Championship, but they are still the two winningest drivers from Belgium.
