Top 5 Worst Performing Sauber F1 Drivers

Top 5 Worst Performing Sauber F1 Drivers
By: Brian Cotnoir

Sauber F1 was one the most successful Swiss based Formula 1 team, and in 2019 they changed their name to Alfa Romeo Racing.  Sauber was a team known for having talented drivers who would go on to have successful careers with other teams.   Sauber F1 was when of the endearing midfield teams of for almost 30 years, but today we’re here to talk about the 5 Worst Performing Drivers they hired

5.)  Mika Salo, 1 Season, 6 Total Points Scored, Best Finish 5th (2X)

Finnish driver Mika Salo spent one season driving for Sauber in 2000, and had some lackluster results.   A disqualification at the opening round in Australia, and a DNS the following weekend in Brazil gave him a monumental challenge to overcome.   Salo did manage a couple points finishes though, but failed to finish one race on a the podium

Back when Red Bull was only a sponsor in F1

4.)  Esteban Gutierrez,  2 Seasons, 6 Total Points Scored, Average Final Points finish 18th

Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez spent two seasons at Sauber.   His results with the team were very lackluster.   He only managed one points finish in the 2013 Japanese Grand Prix where he finished 7th place.

That is one HIDEOUS livery

3.)  Paschal Wehrlein, 1 Season, 5 Total Points Scored, Best Finish 8th
Missed 1st two races of 2017 Season due to injury.

I’m just going to come out and say it: I think Paschal Werhrlein in an Open wheel bust!  He wasn’t good in Formula 1, and I don’t think he’s cut out for Formula E, and if he ever attempted to drive in IndyCar he would probably be a bust there too.

2.)  Pedro Diniz, 2 Seasons, 3 Total Points Scored, Average Final Points Finish 16th Place

Speaking of Busts, Pedro Diniz spent two seasons at Sauber Racing—one of those seasons where he was paired up with Mika Salo—and surprisingly he had the best results of his Formula 1 Career...which is really sad when you look at the numbers.  He only finished 4-out-of-16 races in his first season with the team, and in his second season with the team he failed to score a single point.  It’s no secret to anyone that Diniz only had a career in F1 because his family used their money to pay for it, but even a driver like Lance Stroll managed to score a podium with the F1 career his family bought.

1.)  Adrian Sutil, 1 Season, 0 Points Scored,  Best Finish 11th place (2X)

Sutil spent 5 seasons at Sahara Force India, where he had some moderate success running mid-pack and scoring points, however when he left the team to join Sauber in 2014, he could not yield the same results.  He failed to finish one race in the points, and finished at the bottom of the grid in almost every Grand Prix.  Unfortunatley, for Sutil, he hasn’t raced in Formula 1 since his one and only dismal season with Sauber.

You should have stayed at Force India, Adrian
