Top 5 Worst Performing Tyrrell Racing Drivers
Top 5 Worst Performing Tyrrell Racing Drivers
By: Brian Cotnoir
A lot of new Formula 1 teams typically struggle to
find their footing and speed in the sports when they first begin competing, but
Ken Tyrrell’s team was just the opposite.
They were instant success—practically—when they first began, and it
wasn’t until years later that they really began to struggle. Tyrrell was a part of Formula 1 for 30 years,
and they had some of the best drivers in history such as Sir Jackie Stewart who
won two drivers Championships for the team.
The team also fielded cars with Jean Alesi, Francois Cervert, Ronnie
Peterson, and Didier Pironi all driving for Tyrrell Racing. However, we’re not here to talk about the
Best Tyrrell drivers, we’re here to talk about the Worst Performing Tyrrell
Drivers: Here’s my Top 5.
5.) Martin
Brundle, 2.5 Seasons, 8 Total Points Scored, Highest Average Point Finish 11th
I love Martin Brundle as an F1 commentator, but his
driving record left much to be desired.
Brundle spent the first 2.5 half seasons of his career with the Tyrrell
team. His rookie Season saw him make a
number of decent drivers before breaking both his feet at the Dallas Grand Prix
and he wound up scoring zero points after he and Tyrrell team were Disqualified
from the entire 1984 season for technical infringements. Brundle recovered from his injuries to
return for 2 more seasons with a career best finish of 4th at the
1986 Australian Grand Prix (which was also his final race with Tyrrell).
4.) Ukyo
Katyama, 4 Seasons, 5 Total Points Scored, Highest Points Finish 17th
Katyama drove for Tyrrell for 4 seasons from
1993-1996, he failed to score points in all, but one season driving for the
team (1994, where he scored 5 points on the season). Katyama’s time at Tyrrell was plagued with
many race retirements. He failed to
finish half of the races he ran with the team.
3.) Olivier
Grouillard, 1 Season, 0 Points, 10 Race Retirements
French driver Oliver Grouillard spent 1 season with
the Tyrrell team in 1992, where he only finished 4 Grand Prix’s. His best finish with the team was an 8th
at the 1992 San Marino Grand Prix.
Grouilliard’s one and only season at Tyrrell was also his last season in
Formula 1.
2.) Ricardo
Rosset, 1 Season, 0 Points, 5 DNQ’s & 1 DNS
Ricardo Rosset ran for Tyrrell in their last season
of existence before the team was sold to British American Tobacco. Rosset failed to qualify 5 Grand Prix’s, and
his best finish was an 8th place at the 1998 Canadian Grand Prix.
1.) Julian
Bailey, 1 Season, 0 Points, 10 DNQ’s, 2 Race Retirements
British
driver Julian Bailey made his debut in Formula 1 with the Tyrrell team in the
1988 season; Bailey failed to qualify
in 10 of that season’s 16 races, and unsurprisingly finished the season without
scoring a single point. After an
absolutely awful season with Tyrrell, Bailey would have to wait 3 more years to
get another chance to drive in Formula 1.
He was let go by Team Lotus after failing to qualify for 3 of the first
4 races of 1991 season.
