Top 5 Worst Performing Arrows Grand Prix International drivers

TOP 5 Worst Performing Arrows Grand Prix International drivers

By Brian Cotnoir

Although they never won a Grand Prix Race in there almost two decades of existence, the Arrows team was one of the most iconic midfield runners of the late 20th century.   The team even managed to sign World Champion Damon Hill to drive for them the year after he won the Driver’s Championship with Williams.    Arrows would briefly be known as Footwork in the early 1990’s, but I’m only going to focus specifically on the Arrows drivers for this list.  The only drivers I will be referring drove specifically for Arrows from 1978-1990 and from 1997-2002.  I will possibly do a Top 5 Worst performing Footwork drivers on a later list.

5.) Pedro Diniz, 2 Seasons, Average Points Finish of 15th, Best Finish 5th (2X)

Pedro Diniz’s F1 career as a whole was disastrous!   He just wasn’t that good of a driver; he only made it to Formula 1 is because his family had a lot of money.   The fact that he managed to score any points in Formula 1 is a miracle (considering when he ran only the Top 6 finishers received points).  His best race with Arrows he finished 5th at the 1997 Luxembourg Grand Prix, where he finished ahead of his teammate, defending World Champion Damon Hill.  He matched his best finish the following year at the infamous rain soaked Belgian Grand Prix.

4.)  Pedro de la Rosa, 2 Seasons, Average Points Finish of 17th, Best Finish 6th (3X)

Spanish driver Pedro de la Rosa made his Formula 1 debut with the Arrows team in 1999.  He scored points in his first ever Grand Prix when he finished 6th at that years Australian Grand Prix.    De la Rosa unfortunately would never finish any higher with Arrows, and would only ever have two more points’ finishes with the team.

3.)  Gerhard Berger, 1 Season, 3 Championship Points Scored, Best Finish 5th

Formula 1 legend Gerhard Berger ran his first full-time season in Formula 1 with Arrows.  He ran a handful of races the previous season for the ATS team, but failed to finish in the points.   Berger’s only season with Arrows had some lackluster results.  His only season highlights were a 5th place finish at the 1985 South African Grand Prix, and then follow that up with a 6th place points finish at the season finale in Australia.   Berger would leave Arrows at seasons end and would go on to have success driving for the likes of Benneton, Ferrari, and McLaren.

2.)  Tora Takagi, 1 Season, 0 Points Scored, Best Finish 7th (Australian Grand Prix, 1999)

After three decent seasons in Formula Nippon, Tora Takagi would make his F1 debut with the Tyrell team in 1998, where he would not score any points, and then for the following season he would sign with Arrows and be teamed up with the previously mentioned Pedro de la Rosa.   Takagi failed to score any points that season and that would be the last season Takagi would run in Formula 1.   Takagi would return to Formula Nippon the follow season and won all but two races that season, and easily take the 2000 Formula Nippon Championship

1.)  Enrique Bernoldi, 1.75 Seasons, 0 Points Scored, Best Finish 8th (German Grand Prix, 2001)

Enrique Bernoldi only ran two seasons in Formula 1.  He made his debut with the Arrows team in 2001, but failed to score any points.  The following season the team unfortunately shutdown with 5 races left in the season.  Bernoldi never raced in Formula 1 again.
