5 of the Most Colorful Paint Schemes in NASCAR History
5 of the Most Colorful Paint Schemes in NASCAR History
By Brian H Cotnoir
This year's Daytona 500 saw the debut of a brand-new team called "The Money Team", co-owned by pro-boxer Floyd Mayweather. When the team and driver Kaz Grala showed up, it had one of the most colorful paint schemes seen in a long time. I'll be honest with you: I think this is one of the most hideous paint schemes I've seen in a longtime, but I'll give it credit for a creative use of colors. It got me thinking of other creative uses of colors in NASCAR and here are 5 such of those paint schemes (listed in no particular order)
1.) Mars Company (M&M's and Skittles)- Multiple Teams
The Mars Company is one of the biggest candy companies in the U.S., and they have been one of the longest lasting sponsors today in the Cup Series. Since 1998 they have sponsored multiple teams (MB2 Motorsports, Robert Yates Racing, and Joe Gibbs Racing) with their popular candy brands, Skittles, M&M's, and Snickers.
2.) Terry Labonte- Kelloggs (multiple)
Terry Labonte was sponsored by Kelloggs for over 10 seasons in the NASCR Cup Series. Over the years he raced with many colorful paint schemes based off of popular Kellogs Products, Corn Flakes, Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, and the like. If I had to pick my favorite, I'd definitely say the Kelloggs Cornflakes ride that he won the 1996 drivers' championship with; it was both colorful and iconic.
3.) Mike Skinner- Glidden
A few years before he joined Richard Childress Racing for the inaugural season in the NASCAR Truck Series, Mike Skinner made 4 starts in the Cup Series for the independent Mansion Motorsports. Skinner was sponsored by the paint company, Glidden, and his #13 car was quite good looking. Unfortunately, in 4 starts in the car he never managed to finish better than 23rd.
4.) Adam Petty- Spree Mobile
The Late Adam Petty burst onto the racing seen with this color paint scheme from Spree Mobile. With this colorful paint scheme, he won his ARCA Debut at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and he used it for his Rookie Season in the NASCAR Grand National Series in 1999, and two appearances in the NASCAR Truck Series at Richmond and Texas Motor Speedway. When people think of Adam Petty, this car's paint scheme is the first thing that comes to mind. It was such a popular paint scheme that, Bubba Wallace & Richard Petty Motorsports brought it back for Throwback weekend at Darlington a few years ago.
5.) Jeff Gordon- The Rainbow Warrior
You know I had to include this one! When you're sponsored by a paint company, you better have the most colorful car on the track, and over the years Jeff Gordon's race cars have had some pretty memorable paint schemes. The Blue & Red Flames was a popular one and the paint scheme he had when he won his final championship in 2001. He also made good use of the "Chrome-illusion" paint during the All-Star Race one season, but I don't think it gets any better or more iconic than the "Rainbow Warrior" Paint Scheme he had from his first race in 1992 all the way to the 2000 season.
